If you have a toothache and can’t go to a dentist, there are multiple ways you can get rid of tooth pain at home. Try these simple at-home tooth pain remedies that can help you get rid of tooth pain completely.

Clove Oil

Clove oil can relieve tooth pain because it contains eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic. It can help numb the affected area and ease toothache symptoms.

Dilute the clove oil with a few drops of carrier oil (olive, almond, or coconut oil) and soak the cotton ball with the mixture. Apply the cotton ball to the affected area and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint can soothe tooth pain due to its mild numbing properties.

Wait for the used tea bag to cool down to room temperature and place the tea bag over the tooth with pain. You can also cool your tea bag in the freezer for a couple of minutes before use.

Salt Water Rinse

Salt water has antibacterial properties, and it can promote temporary pain relief, help reduce swelling and heal any oral wounds.

Making your salt water mouth rinse is easy, just add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water and rinse your mouth with this solution. Just make sure not to swallow any of the salt water while you rinse.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

A mix of hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) and water makes an antibacterial mouthwash that can relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

To use this, mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and swish it in the mouth for about 30 seconds. Make sure not to swallow the solution.

Alcohol-Soaked Cotton Balls

Alcohol like whiskey, scotch, vodka, and brandy can kill germs and help numb the area around the tooth.

Soak a cotton ball in some sort of alcohol and apply it to your tooth for temporary pain relief. You can use this remedy as often as required.

Garlic

Garlic has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that can kill harmful bacteria which may be the cause of tooth pain. It can help relieve tooth pain and also help heal your gums.

To use this remedy, crush a fresh garlic clove with the back of the spoon to make it into a paste. Put the paste on the affected tooth and leave it on for about 10 minutes. You can also try simply chewing a fresh clove of garlic.

Onion

Onions are a natural antiseptic and can kill germs that cause tooth pain and infections.

Simply slice an onion and hold it against the affected tooth for a few minutes. You can also try chewing on a piece of raw onion for a minute or two before spitting it out.

Cold Compress

A cold compress can help reduce swelling and inflammation. It can also ease pain, especially if the tooth pain is caused by an injury or swollen gums. The cold will constrict the blood vessels and slow the flow of blood to the affected area.

Try to wrap a bag of frozen peas or a bag of ice with a towel and put it against the affected area for a few minutes at a time.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains alcohol which can help to numb the pain caused by a toothache. It also has antioxidant properties that can help heal wounds.

To use this approach, simply use a cotton swab or cotton ball to dab the area that’s hurting with the extract. Make sure to use real vanilla extract rather than the imitation.

Guava Leaves

Guava leaves are known for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can sterilize oral wounds and also numb toothache.

To use this remedy, simply chew on a couple of fresh guava leaves until the juices are released. Then apply the leaves to the affected area and hold them in place for 30 minutes.

Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce tooth pain and minimize swelling.

Gently swishing wheatgrass juice in your mouth will greatly help in removing harmful bacteria that cause tooth pain. You can also try applying the juice directly to the affected area using a cotton ball.

Elevation

Elevating your head can help reduce the pain in your tooth. Letting blood rush to your head causes additional pain and inflammation.

Try sleeping with your head elevated on a thick pillow or several pillows.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Sugary foods, citrus fruits, and carbonated drinks can aggravate your teeth and any cavities that may have already formed.

Try limiting the consumption of these trigger foods and remember to brush and floss regularly to remove any food particles that may be stuck in the teeth. Rinse your teeth with a mouthwash that contains alcohol to both disinfect and numb your teeth.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Over-the-counter pain medications can reduce tooth pain and inflammation.

You can try taking medications such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and aspirin. Just make sure to take the medication according to the product label.
